Synopsis
Meriem has died. Mary has landed in Tunis to attend the funeral. She is shocked and disoriented, but she knows that to reach Kairouan, her friend's hometown, she must take a taxi. So she hops on the first one she finds. Taxi driver Hedi becomes a sort of Virgil for her: with him, Mary travels through a country precariously balanced between celebration and revolution, hope and protest, in the midst of the political upheaval following the liberation from dictatorship. During the journey, Mary's memories burst into the present: moments of her life in Rome with Meriem and of the holiday in Kairouan where she fell in love with Faruk... Gradually revealing herself to herself, Mary will become aware of her limitations and embark on her own personal revolution. With this road novel with a surprise ending, the author recounts the friendship between two women who, each in their own way, search for and find their own identity and affection, bringing to light unusual aspects of two different cultures.
