Strategies for furnishing the void

Paul Marino

Strategie per arredare il vuoto

Mondadori

Synopsis

Summer has just begun to scorch the plain when a crack appears in Edo's life. His is the existence of a normal thirteen-year-old, made special by an imagination as sensitive as a seismograph, which translates the slightest vibration of reality into the vertigo of surreal landscapes, where lines, proportions, and colors give life to a distorted and dusty world. Edo comes into contact with adults reluctantly and only to the extent strictly necessary. What could be worse, then, than the incomprehensible encirclement of relatives who have been hovering around him cautiously for a couple of days? Until, discomfited and deafening, grief explodes: something terrible has happened, and Edo's parents will never return home. Luckily, his uncles know exactly what to do; Edo will go live with Aunt Selma, and everything will continue as before. Except he has no intention of complying. He doesn't make a scene, he simply refuses to leave his home. Freed from the chattering presence of adults, Edo's home becomes the center of attraction for a series of bizarre characters: the complementary twins Greta and Lavinia, whose giggles "make the air creak" and introduce him to the mystery of female complicity and antagonism; his classmate Enea, who, without ever crossing the threshold, tries to involve his friend in bicycle escapades along the riverbank.
