Synopsis

1980s, southern Italy. The life of a large, modest family, dominated by a depressed and abusive father, is turned upside down when the mother joins a religious sect called the Society, which promises survival from an imminent end of the world. Giuliano Flavio, the youngest child, who feels unconditional love for the gentle and generous woman, can do nothing but join the others on the path that will lead them all to eternal life. But what begins as a dream quickly becomes a nightmare of obligations and prohibitions, of isolation from the extended family, of apocalyptic visions and terrors. As the world of the family "as he knows it" gradually crumbles, Giuliano must fight hard to gain independence, starting with the possibility of freely experiencing a love that was forbidden to him, for the "unbelieving" Sara.
