The author successfully combines everyday reality, engagement, and distance with a flowing and simple style of writing, but above all, one capable of moving the reader through precise and profound evocative imagery.

I really enjoyed this book. The story flows very well and brings out a variety of emotions. It's easy to identify with the characters and share feelings or parts of your own experiences with them. There are intense parts and lighter ones, but they all have something to teach and reflect on. I enjoyed the characters' development, from childhood to adulthood; I learned not to underestimate those characters who initially didn't appeal to either me or the protagonist.

Set in Lavagna, a small Ligurian town, the novel follows the life of Leonardo and his friendship with Gabriele, known as Gabs. Since childhood, Leonardo has been fascinated by Gabriele, a brilliant but enigmatic boy, and their friendship deepens after the sudden death of Gabriele's father, an event that profoundly affects them both. However, as the years pass, tensions emerge: Gabriele exhibits increasingly disturbing behavior and, during the summer of his junior year of high school, commits an act of violence that shocks his group of friends. Despite this, Leonardo continues to justify his friend, blinded by a sense of loyalty and guilt. After Gabriele flees Lavagna, Leonardo stays, trying to rebuild his life. Years later, Gabriele's return forces him to confront his past and seek a path to forgiveness and redemption. I enjoyed the book because it addresses important themes such as growth, identity, responsibility, and the need for forgiveness.

It's a thought-provoking read, especially about how relationships influence our choices and our view of ourselves.
