Synopsis

Anne-Rose D., a writer of refined verse, is at the Paris airport with her worn suitcases: she is returning from a "forbidden journey" and is eager to return to Rue du Bac, home again. Years later, Maurice Bruant moves through the rooms of that apartment with its walls "neither white nor perfectly smooth" and books climbing every wall: among the papers he finds Anne-Rose's "mad autobiography," a diary whose pages contain the entire life of her former lover, her loneliness, the pain of childhood, the passion lost to an absurd act of violence, the love never found again. A life marked by discomfort and illusions, the dream of a journey that becomes an obsession, the annoyance at the callous vulgarity of the world around her. That world that bustles through the streets of Paris where Anne-Rose continues to live feeling like a “tourist”, an outsider, almost as if people “wanted to reproach her for all the verses she composed”.
