Synopsis

1917, New Jersey. The US Radium Corporation opens a new factory for the treatment of military instruments, where employees, known as dial painters, are tasked with painting the dials of watches. Radium, the element at the base of Undark, the phosphorescent paint used, is celebrated worldwide as new and innovative, but research on it is still incomplete, clouded by an aura of ambiguity. Over the years, the girls begin to fall ill one after another and die mysteriously, without truly knowing the cause. Only five of them will succeed in a long and grueling trial, seeking the truth and, above all, those responsible.

I found this book very interesting because it allowed me to delve into a new scientific topic that was previously unknown to me. It concerns the use of radium in a New Jersey factory, which caused numerous deaths among female workers. The central theme is workplace safety, a highly topical one, given that it is still widely discussed, albeit in different contexts. Equally important is the issue of retributive justice: after the trial, the surviving girls or their families received financial compensation.
