Synopsis

Albert, the patriarch who arrived from Germany in 1875, became a successful and enthusiastic businessman and married Johanna Benjamin, who would become the mother of his eight children. Between the countryside and the city, he built a magnificent villa, on whose facade the inscription "Lik dör" ("The light is there") stood out. These were years of prosperity, success, and unity. A succession of events disrupted the family's serenity: the Messina earthquake, the First World War, the death of their two sons, and finally the racial laws that restored the Ahrens family to their Jewish identity. The economic collapse led to a decline that did not prevent Marta, Vera, Berta, and Margherita from carrying forward the "light" of the values ​​that had always inspired the family: courage, dignity, rigor, and hope. The fusion of individual stories and history enlivens the framework of a saga centered on at least three memorable female figures: Johanna, an intrepid and wise fortune-builder alongside her husband; Marta, afflicted by severe deafness that doesn't prevent her from "feeling" where the world is going and managing her affairs; Vera, inspired by her father's determination.
