The Dragunera

Linda Barbarino

La Dragunera

The Assayer

Synopsis

Rosa would do anything to return to her childhood home, when she flew into her father's arms and sang on a basil-scented terrace. But Rosa can't return, because the house is in ruins and she has become the town whore to survive. Every Saturday, Paolo whistles at her window to buy a few hours of her love. Every Saturday, Rosa's door opens to let him in. Paolo works the family vineyards and is obsessed with another woman he hates and desires with equal ferocity, a woman he should keep at bay because she is his brother's wife and her very name evokes storm and disaster. The Dragunera, as they call her, is a sensual and haughty woman, her hair is like the wind, her lizard-like eyes visit him in dreams; some say she is a witch. She walks on high heels along the cobblestone streets, her breasts seemingly outlined under her tight dress, her face devoid of shame and fear.
