Synopsis

Liliana Manfredi's story is a true one. She is the sole survivor of a Nazi massacre in June 1944. She was eleven years old that terrible night, when thirty-five innocent civilians were murdered at Bettola, in the hills of Reggio Emilia. But Liliana's story has an added element, which perhaps makes her unique. Shot alongside her mother and grandparents, she was fortunate to be only wounded, and had the courage to attempt a daring escape to the river. And it was there, on the banks of the Crostolo stream, with a broken leg and three bullets in her bleeding body, that the miracle occurred: the Nazi patrolling the area after the massacre discovered Liliana hiding in the grass and, instead of administering the final blow, carried her out onto the main road, risking a court martial to save her life.
