Synopsis

7th century AD. Rotari is the son of the Duke of Brescia. He is imposing, rebellious, and self-confident. The blood of a king flows in his veins. But in Italy divided between the Lombards and the Byzantines, the road to the crown is fraught with peril, and Rotari has only one friend he can count on: Stiliano—exiled from Cividale for his dissolute behavior, who became first his master, then his lord's inseparable companion. Together, the two face ambushes, adventurous journeys, vendettas, intrigues, and betrayals. Because at the court of Queen Teodolinda, loyalty is a rare commodity, and the thirst for power spares no one.
