Synopsis

When Hugo Fischer arrives at Auschwitz on December 23, 1943, it's snowing and Block 10 seems more ghostly than usual. He's the Kriminalpolizei's top investigator and harbors a secret that makes him addicted to morphine. He's been called to the camp to find out who murdered Sigismud Braun, a pediatrician who worked closely with Josef Mengele during his experiments on twins, but he has no idea what he's about to face. In Berlin, little is known about what happens in the concentration camps, and he's not ready to face the horrors being perpetrated beyond the barbed wire. His career, perhaps even his life, depends on solving the case, and Fischer will find himself dealing with Nazi soldiers and doctors, a cruel and deviant humanity, but also with some prisoners who continue to resist. Among them is Gioele, a Jewish boy with eyes so peculiar that they have attracted Mengele's attention. It was he who found Dr. Braun's body and sketched the crime scene with his astonishing drawing skills. While everything around them becomes, day by day, a final descent into hell, a strange friendship will be born between Gioele and Hugo Fischer, an affection unusual in that place of horror, and for this very reason even more precious.
