Synopsis

Throughout her life, Laura Paliani has felt compelled to live up to her parents, her father Luigi, a famous conductor, and her mother Olga, an equally famous opera singer. Laura's family is unusual and complicated: they speak little, and music, always at the center of everything, replaces words, bringing the three of them together and then driving them apart. Especially Luigi, who emerges physically and psychologically exhausted from his beloved Mahler (no one can conduct one of his compositions like Paliani). And it is precisely after a Mahler cycle that he falls into a deep depression that leads him to a spiritual dead end, where he is lost forever. Laura, following profound disagreements with her mother, decides to leave home, disappear, and start a new life in another city—a life without music, where the days flow the same, punctuated by work in a rabbit slaughterhouse. Then one day a telegram reaches her, forcing her to reckon with everything she's left behind, but above all, to reckon with herself and with music, which, she finally realizes, thanks also to men like her father, can connect separate worlds, reveal invisible, yet no less real, dimensions. To help us discover, perhaps, our true home.
