Synopsis

In Srebrenica, the only way to remain innocent was to die. Marco Magini was a boy during the terrible events in the former Yugoslavia, knowing them only from the news. But when, as a student, he came across Drazen's story, it became an obsession. That story told of a twenty-year-old forced to fight a war desired by another generation, faced with decisions whose exceptionality laid bare the human soul, like in an ancient Greek drama. The reenactment of the massacre and the subsequent trial at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia is entrusted to three alternating voices in a well-paced score. The voice of Spanish magistrate Romeo González recalls the proceedings of the trial, highlighting the less-than-ethical and transparent reasons that determine a sentence. In the eternal struggle between obeying fratricidal laws and rebelling by invoking inviolable human rights, only a poor and bureaucratic image of the exercise of law emerges. Judge González is joined by the voices of Dirk, a Dutch peacekeeper stationed in Srebrenica, a representative of the UN contingent guilty of failing to prevent the massacre, and that of the Serbo-Croat soldier Drazen Erdemovic, the true protagonist of the story, a volunteer in the Serbian army, who was the only one to confess to having participated in the massacre, the only one tried and convicted.
