Synopsis

The protagonist of this novel is a solitary and seemingly scrupulous postman living in a town in the Marche region. His personal story is at the center (the clerk's anger, squalid love affairs, a daily routine filled with irony and desolation), but it also features the stories of his neighborhood, the daily tragedies that the postman's morbid curiosity brings to the reader's attention. An accountant receives his dismissal letter, but to avoid telling his wife, he pretends to live his normal life until he dies of a heart attack on the street; a middle-aged woman is murdered by her husband in a fit of madness; a man dresses up as Santa Claus to see his daughter, who lives with her divorced mother..
