Synopsis
Among the attendees at a wild party that ends in mass suicide, Massimo is the only one who doesn't pull the trigger. Yet the end is near, for everyone. War looms, and the Castaways are arriving. In just a few months, what initially seemed like just a small group of fanatics has grown unstoppably, so much so that it has subverted the entire global order. The only thing that unites its members is the abandonment of all verbal communication. The Castaways express themselves through their actions, actions that are violent, destructive, definitive. To kill oneself or be killed, one place is as good as another, Massimo knows this well. But at the last minute, he decides to spend the little time he has left with Piero, his father, confined to the Hospice San Giuda, a sanatorium nestled in the valleys of a hinterland that closely resembles Liguria. Massimo has never been able to accept his father's illness, but now, feeling equally doomed, he needs his father's presence. A similar shift in perspective will allow the other residents of the Hospice to resist the weight of desperation. Whether it's Dr. Malandra, a shy surgeon and morphine addict; Guido, a nurse, alcoholic, and a fanatic; or Olga, a nun struggling with happiness and her past, they will all understand the ultimate, possible truth: that there can be hope without hope.
