Synopsis

Eloi knew the letter would arrive sooner or later; what he didn't know was that carrying out what was written would be so difficult. Of course, we've all been there, here in Cadossene: that's what the Gods want, and that's what the Republic wants. The fact is, this whole thing is much more difficult for Eloi than it is for the other young people on the island, given that his father, Nevio, raised him alone after his mother's death, and on top of that, he was a good father, generous and hardworking, who broke his back for his son and made sure he lacked nothing, wherever possible. Eloi knows this, and that's also why, at almost thirty, she still lives with him. For this and for many other reasons that have to do with the fear of growing up. That's why, when the letter arrives, Eloi curses the Gods: because from now on, he can no longer back out. So, Eloi and Nevio set out on a journey: a journey that takes them from Algàr, their hometown, to Belvì, a sinister, depopulated village where Aunt Smeralda still insists on living, and then up to the slopes and all the way to the top of the mountain. Because this is the task of Eloi and all the sons of Cadossene: armed with clubs, to kill their old men and women and throw their bodies into the abyss of the mountain. So that the old men and women do not burden society. Because that's what the Gods want.
