Synopsis
The novel is set in 1200, in a village in the Alps, beneath Monte Rosa. The inhabitants belong to an ethnic group originating from Switzerland, the Walser, and prosper by trading, particularly wool. But prosperity has made them narrow-minded and arid, deaf to the needs of the less fortunate. Among them, Hermann stands out, thirsty for money and power, willing to do anything to secure the title of vassal to the local lord. But a grave danger looms over the community. Brother Matthew, aware of this, has left England on a purification pilgrimage. He sees in a dream the fate that threatens them and decides to alter his journey to warn them.
