The man who spoke at funerals
Mario Zangrando
L’uomo che parlava ai funerali
Astoria
Synopsis
Renato is a funeral expert. In his notebooks, he meticulously notes the time and place, adding a few special details about the deceased, and then off he goes, one service after another, all day, every day. A few well-chosen words, friends and relatives shed a final tear, and his mission is accomplished. But why does he do this? Renato's life once included a family, his job as a municipal employee, seaside vacations, much love—and some bickering—for his wife Lidia, and many hopes—and some worries—for his son Luca. But that life is no more, and he has decided to fill the void with the tears of others, to stay close to death as if it were a friend, perhaps to understand it, perhaps to deceive it. Yet fate still has many surprises in store for Renato, starting with the mysterious woman who, dressed in black and also carrying a notebook, seems to follow him from funeral to funeral... With a direct yet intensely poetic style, Mario Zangrando tells us an extraordinary story that captivates, makes us smile, and moves us: because the light of hope never goes out, because life is unpredictable, because the heart can never stop dreaming.
