The Kaufmann case
John Grasso
Il caso Kaufmann
Rizzoli
Synopsis
Kaufmann is sixty years old, a respected Jewish businessman, a widower, and the president of the Jewish community of Nuremberg. His life is turned upside down when a dear friend asks him to host his daughter while she studies. Irene is twenty, beautiful, and determined, and a special bond develops between her and Kaufmann, one of respect, affection, and even desire. But she is Aryan, and under the racial laws, the Jewish people are enemies of Germany. Hatred, expertly fomented by the Nazi regime, slowly enters the lives of the citizens: mistrust and hostility replace respect and esteem. Gazes lower, smiles fade. And when even Justice is transformed into a Nazi monster, there will be no escape for honesty and truth.
