Numbers don't tell lies

Claudia Mincione

I numeri non dicono bugie

Garzanti

Synopsis

The night is silent, but Pietro is awake. He counts the breaths of his little sister sleeping next to him. Pietro counts everything: her steps, her words, her heartbeats. His mind is a universe of numbers and perfect sequences that bring order to chaos. Because chaos is all he's known in his seven years of life. His family is chaos. His father is a difficult man, his mother is no longer with him, and his stepmother, Maria, is too busy putting her life back together to truly care for them. There's no logic that can explain why his family is so different from all the others. Like that of Mike, his best friend. He has two smiling parents who love being with him, a fragrant house, and a routine that seems to work effortlessly. Pietro is clearly aware of the difference. So he makes a decision: his sister Teresa must be happy. Without feeling out of place. She must have the certainty of a home that will always be there waiting for her. But it's a difficult promise to keep. Because not everything can be counted, not everything can be controlled. And as the night continues to pass, silent and filled with thoughts, Pietro still doesn't know that not everything is as it seems. And that, perhaps, even children raised in a happy family have secrets.
