Mr. Hulford's Box

La scatola del signor Hulford
The Assayer
Synopsis
Farid is a journalist of Iraqi origins. After years of absence, he returns to Baghdad to cover the first democratic elections since the fall of Saddam Hussein. While attempting to recover a box buried in the garden of his old home, a friend is killed. Shaimà is crossing the desert on her way to Baghdad. She has some money with her. She's confident it will be enough to find someone willing to help her, someone capable of freeing her from the life she's carrying. Tim is an American soldier, returning from Iraq due to an injury sustained in an explosion. One day, he receives an email from a fellow soldier: one of their comrades sent him the tapes shot during patrols in Baghdad and hanged himself. Three characters, three destinies that intersect in a nightmarish Baghdad and will be fulfilled on the other side of the world, in a small village in the Appalachian Mountains, inside a glass cabinet in Mr. Hulford's motel, where some memorabilia from September 11th are kept. In a tin box. Some say the box glows when Mr. Hulford places it on people's chests. Sometimes, in his sleep, Mr. Hulford dreams that the devil comes to the motel to steal the box. He's a helpful and kind man, the devil. I want them all, he says, give me all the sins that are in that box. But Mr. Hulford is never afraid, and he whispers to the devil the words of Dylan Thomas: "And death shall have no dominion."
